Change of Seasons

Now for some non-Artists In Jackson updates.

Hello there.

Our summers are busy. Yours probably are, too.

But this summer seemed particular hectic. July, with our Atlantic Coast trip, disappeared in a flash.

Then we were on to Pentwater, and me with work trips to Phoenix, Arizona (in July!) and Brooklyn, New York.

Poof. Goodbye summer. Now we’re sliding quickly into autumn.

  • All those trips means lots and lots of photography - so much that I’m still curating and editing pictures from our Nova Scotia and Maine trip.

  • And I’m still making time to grab Aiden during marching band season, Madelyn’s birthday party, and my walks around Jackson neighborhoods.

  • In addition, Artists In Jackson continues to profile creative people in our community. I have a few more features coming up in the next few weeks.

My YouTube Channel

I love working in video production, whether that’s hosting a video podcast at work or working on a full-fledge documentary.

Just for fun, I started working on my YouTube channel and focus on creative work and camera reviews. It’s also a fun way to showcase some of my photography.

Like and subscribe, as the kids say.

The Full Monty

Me and my family are in Center Stage Jackson’s upcoming production of The Full Monty. I’m also doing some behind the scenes photography of our rehearsals (above).

This is a new thing for me. But Jaime, Madelyn, and Riley had so much fun during Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, it was hard to say no, even if it’s outside of my comfort zone.

Things I’m Into Lately

  • If nothing else, can we all agree that the U.S. is feeling kind of crazy right now? Meanwhile, our kids continue to suffer needlessly at school. Apart from all the famous people dying, we also have innocent children dying. We’ve had way too many scares in the past few years in our own school district. That’s why this faux back to school video from the Sandy Hook Promise hits so hard (warning: it hits very hard if you’re a parent).

  • Speaking of kids: If you’re into family photography, sprinkled with some controversy, you can’t beat Sally Mann. I loved her low-key typewriter interview with Austin Kleon, and this in-depth New York Times interview (the photos are great, too). Now I’m eager to grab her new new book, Art Work: On the Creative Life.

  • I’m trying to get better at unsubscribing from emails and newsletters I either no longer need or never signed up for. Did you know there are digital products (with a great name!) that help you do exactly that? I guess I’m old school - I just click that “unsubscribe” links as often as I can. There are other methods, but boy, seems like a lot of effort for something that’s often not my fault.

  • What’s the price of comfort? Maybe 30-foot long arms?

If you want to follow all the Artists In Jackson 2 activities, like the Facebook page or follow me on Instagram.

For photography, I post to Flickr almost daily, but my photo blog is the best place for pictures, thoughts, and ideas.

Next time we talk, I’ll have another Artists In Jackson profile ready.

Happy cider season,

Dave Lawrence
