Artists In Jackson: Tim Péwé

Art as whimsy, motion, and making just 'cause.

Hello again.

For the latest Artists In Jackson 2 profile, I talk with sculptor Tim Péwé about his figurative and kinetic sculptures.

Tim’s work blends whimsy with craftsmanship. His pieces often balance, spin, or sway – sometimes, just for fun.

“A lot of this stuff moves or has a purpose, but it’s not like a practical purpose,” he says. “I like the idea of making something that does something, but there’s really no reason for it.”

I got to see those moving pieces first-hand out at Tim’s studio in rural Jackson county, where he and his wife, Brigit, gifted me with a carton of their delicious strawberries and showed me around their lovely rural property.

Read all about Tim and his creative background, and check out some of his pieces:

I have two more artists in the hopper that I’m excited to share before the end of the year. That makes nine new artist profiles and portraits since March - not bad.

As with any creative project, there were fits and starts along the way. But I’m super grateful to the artists I got to meet and talk with this year.

Reboots are fun. Thanks for all your support.

Lisbon, Portugal Trip

Caparica, Portugal

Jaime and I escaped North America to celebrate our 10-year anniversary and headed to Portugal for a nice long weekend in October.

It was a lovely adventure, and I’m grateful for it: the company 😉, the weather, the food, and the gracious people of Portugal. I had SO many photos to pick from. I’m super proud of the work.

Check out some on my Instagram, and more will be coming on the blog in the next few weeks.

Things I’m Into Lately

  • Photographing Route 66 takes me back. It’s been 20 years since I drove Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. Some artifacts are still there, but it’s amazing how much of the ol’ Mother Road is slowly falling apart.

  • Speaking of travel - I could watch videos like Kyle Kotajarvi’s all day long. Photographer and video maker hikes out to the mountains or sails down to Patagonia? It’s like visual comfort food for people like me.

  • 6 Abandoned Towns In Michigan That Nature Is Slowly Reclaiming - again: comfort food, and a good checklist of places to visit and photograph.

  • In "How 'Free Speech Culture Is Killing Free Speech," Ken White argues that the modern concept of “free speech culture” undermines actual free speech by prioritizing the rights of powerful speakers (like Charlie Kirk) over dissenters, conflating criticism with censorship (criticism is free speech, too), which all ultimately enables suppression of speech. I saw all of this first-hand in higher education. It’s just getting worse.

If you want to follow all the Artists In Jackson 2 activities, like the Facebook page or follow me on Instagram. I’m sharing some non-iPhone photos on Instagram (which is a big deal for me), and I enjoy sharing travel videos on there, too.

Now we slide into winter and the holiday season. Let me know how you’re doing.

Be safe,

Dave Lawrence
